The Red Sea Bulletin took part at the wine presentation, of which three are not yet available in retail as the collection from Sahara Vineyards was provided by Thomas and Barbara Bordiehn (Bordiehn’s Restaurant)
Looking at the essence of the evening with the degustation of 10 Egyptian premium wines, all that is left to be said is a “Mabrouk!” for Karim Hwaidak, Labib Kallas and Sebastien Boudry, the responsible cellarars of Sahara Vinyards, Egypt International Beverages und Al Ahram / Gianaclis.
The top wines of the evening:
Ayam 2008 Cuvée Red with Syrah & Cabernet Sauvignon | Al Ahram / Gianaclis |
Ayam 2009 Cuvée White with Viognier, Marsanne & Roussanne | Al Ahram / Gianaclis |
Caspar 2009 White from Chenin Blanc | Sahara Vinyards |
Caspar 2009 Blanc de Noirs from Grenache Noir | Sahara Vinyards |
Caspar 2009 White from Viognier | Sahara Vinyards |
Jardin du Nil 2009 from Vermentino | EgyBev |
The Beausoleil-collection was also well graded:
Beausoleil 2008 White from Bannati | EgyBev |
Beausoleil 2008 Rosé from Merlot | EgyBev |
Beausoleil 2008 Red with Merlot & Cabernet Sauvignon | EgyBev |
Château des Rêves 2008 Red with Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan & Syrah | Al Ahram / Gianaclis |
You can have all these wines delivered by Cheers in El Gouna (To order from Cheers: 19131)
The cellarars have done a very good job, based on European methods as well as with European quality vines they have produced authentic wines that are 100% Egyptian and which are not comparable to the top-selling wines of the lower price categories (Obelisk, Omar Khayyam).
In January 2010 Labib Kallas and Hadji-Thomas, responsible for EgyBev, presented their Jardin du Nil at an international Organic Wine competition between 26 wine producing countries, causing quite a sensation and receiving acclaim. Many wine experts still cannot believe that it is possible to cultivate high quality red, white and rosé wines in the prevailing conditions of a desert climate.
Already in 2009 Al Ahram / Gianaclis were represented at the wine fair in Bordeaux and Sahara Vinyards was very successful at the wine fair in Duesseldorf.
It is well worth testing the good Egyptian wines!
Since May, after months of quietude with just occasional new releases, movement is coming back to the shelves at Drinkies (Al Ahram) and Cheers (EgyBev). The wines of 2009 can finally be tasted – just three months before the harvest of 2010 starts.
Red Sea Bulletin specially recommends: Leila Rosé by Al Ahram / Gianaclis
